Footers

I rented a back hoe and dug out my footers today for my new garage. I dug down 30 inches to clay like soil. Does anyone recommend tamping the bottom of the trench before I pour the footers?

If you truely hit clay you want to over excavate and bring it back up with stone the the bottom of footing grade. Did a little deeper and see what you are dealing with. Also, where in the country are you? Poured concrete foundation or CMU?
