Dawg, please help by explaining roofing nails versus roofing staples? What is better? How many per shingle? Does area (ie., high wind area) determine how many nails or staples?

Staples will tear because of surface tension of the staple verses that of a nail head. Nail pattern varies due to local code, MFG wind lift warranties and steepness of roof. Thickness of roof deck dictates length of fastener required.

NEVER use staples on an asphalt roof. They can be used on wood shingle roofing. Nails only on asphalt shingles

We've always used only staples on wood shake but only stainless staples.

If you go on the website of the shingle manufacturer they will have install directions, not done to there specs. no matter what advice you get on any DIY site the warranty is voided.
Biggest mistake I see done all the time when installing architectural shingles by both DIY's and so called Pros is not nailing them in the nail line the manfacturer took the trouble of printing right on the shingle.
That line is not the exposure line!
The shingles are made in two pieces, there nailed to high the two pieces are not held together, to low and the nail can show.
I've seen at least a dozen Manstead style roofs with the shingles sliding down the roof, most were nailed to high, and only 4 nails were used instead of the required 6.

Only places I've seen staples used on a roof is cheap store bought sheds and mobile homes.
