Hard Wiring Existing dishwasher

Hello,

When I bought the home all new appliances had been installed. Well it looks like the dishwasher was partially installed. From what I can tell they stripped the plug from the cord exposing the wiring. It looks pretty simple to me, white to white, black to black, but I want to make sure. There's a picture attached. The white cord is from the breaker and black is the dishwasher.

The black appears to be romex, not an appliance cord.

Interesting, it is wired directly into the dishwasher, should I be concerned if it's not the right cord, is this a quick fix or should I reach out to an electrician?

I'd hire an elec. who will properly attach and support the romex.

Personally, I've never hard wired a DW, and never will, because any work that needs to be done on them requires 2 trips to the breaker. I always plug them into a accessible receptacle.

I don’t think you have to hire a pro yet as we can walk you thru hooking up a couple wires. First off you need a way to make sure the power feeding the white wire is off. A multi meter is the best tool to do that. Then I would pull out the dishwasher on the other side of that partition where the black wire goes and get a look at where it goes. Hopefully it is long enough to pull it out without taking the black wire away from the Jbox.


Once you get to that point another photo of how it is connected would put my mind at rest if you want to continue or do something different like @Snoonyb has suggested in adding a outlet to that side of the partition and then putting a pigtail cord back on the dishwasher.


There might have been a remodel done and the dishwasher was moved to a new location and the power was to far away so they did this hookup. It is better to see the whole picture than guess. And don’t start until you know 100% that feed wire is dead and on a proper breaker and hopefully one dedicated to just the dishwasher.

Here are some pictures of the cord leading into the DW. Seems to be in pretty rough shape, the outlet is quite a distance from here so I am assuming you are correct in the fact it needed to be extended.

Yes pretty rough. If it was mine I would kill the power to that Jbox and figure out what all is on that same circuit. If it is dedicated for the dishwasher I would get rid of that old chewed up romex and that loose wire clamp that is a problem waiting to happen. I would extend that power fron the Jbox with new romex into a new Jbox behind the DW. I would then put in an outlet. Wire a pigtail from the DW with a plug on the end and now when you get a new DW down the road the swap will be easy. If that old wire looks ok far enough back from where the insulation is ripped and it is going to be a pain to rerun then maybe you could use part of it.


Some pros will be along and tell us if I’m wrong or they may have other suggestions.
